The street gets loud first

Painted in whatever the docks had left over
The walk starts three blocks out, where the houses are sheet metal over timber and no two panels agree on a colour. The story the neighbourhood tells is that the paint came off the ships — leftovers from the port, brushed on in whatever order the tins came out of the crate.
Balconies hang low enough to touch. Laundry crosses the street overhead. Somewhere behind the roofline a floodlight is already burning, washing the top of the block in a hard white that the streetlamps can't match.
You hear it two streets early. A drum, then a second drum finding it. Chapter 00 · 20:51
01 The wall · where the street ends
Then the street ends, and the wall starts
You do not see it coming. The blocks look the same the whole way down — tin, balconies, washing — and then the houses simply stop, and there is a wall where the next street should be. Flat, grey, four storeys of it, still carrying the paint of thirty years of announcements.
The noise you have been following for ten minutes is on the other side of it. From here it stops being a sound in the distance and becomes a thing with a location.
Nobody here looks up at it. Everyone who lives on this street stopped noticing it a long time ago. Chapter 01 · 20:58
02 The threshold · raw concrete
The last quiet place in the building
Under the stand the temperature drops. Pillars every four metres, poured rough and never finished, holding up fifty thousand people who are all doing the same thing at the same time directly overhead.
The noise arrives as pressure before it arrives as sound. At the mouth of the tunnel the light is a flat white rectangle, and everything between here and there is silhouette.
Fifty thousand people directly overhead, and down here you can still hear your own footsteps. Chapter 02 · 21:04
03 The pitch · eye level
Down here the stands are a ceiling
From the grass the geometry stops making sense. The stands don't recede, they climb — and they keep climbing, until the top row sits somewhere up near the floodlights and the people in it read as texture rather than as a crowd.
The noise arrives downward. It comes off the concrete and lands on you, and there is nowhere out here you can stand to get out from under it.
Nobody in this building is behind you. They are all above you. Chapter 03 · 21:12
04 The stands · full throat
It doesn't tremble. It beats.
The stands here go up, not back. You step out of the concrete into a wall of people stacked almost vertically above you, close enough that the whole structure moves on the same beat — a slow, deliberate bounce that starts in the top tier and arrives in your knees.
Smoke crosses the floodlights in blue and gold. Paper falls for a full minute after kickoff and keeps falling. Nothing about it is decorative; it is the building doing what it was built to do.
Every camera cut is the same shot: people, at an angle no other stadium allows. Chapter 04 · 21:26
05 Back under it · after the whistle
The half of the building that does not move
Afterwards, on the way out, the corridors go cold again and the noise you were standing inside ten minutes ago is somewhere above your head. This is the other half of the building — lit cases, unlabelled plinths, and twelve framed faces along the wall.
Turn a card over and there is a table of numbers on the back. The part that survives, and the part that explains the least about what you just heard.
The numbers are the smallest true thing you can say about a player. Chapter 05 · 23:18
06 The far end · cloth and light boxes
A colour, a band, and the same five shapes
Nine shirts on a rail, and nothing written on any of them. No sponsor, no maker, no year. Stripped back to what they actually are: a colour, a band, and a shape a person goes inside.
Past them, the light boxes. A shield or a ring, a band across it, some stars for the things that were won. Every crest in the sport is built from the same small set of parts — these ones invented, drawn here, belonging to nobody.
The band is the whole argument. Everything else is administration. Chapter 06 · 23:26
07 Manifesto · colophon
Build the noise, not the logo
- Every surface in the scene is drawn at runtime. The tin, the concrete, the pitch, the chainlink: all of it computed in the browser, none of it loaded.
- The camera never cuts. Eight chapters, one path, driven entirely by how far you have scrolled.
- No framework, no bundler, no package manager. One HTML file, a vendored renderer, and a font.
- Reduced motion is not a degraded version. It is the same story, held still.
- A stadium is a machine for amplifying people. So is a good page.
